The Trump administration has announced a $1.9 billion loan to NextEra Energy to support the restart of Iowa’s Duane Arnold Nuclear Plant, a project expected to become the state’s only operating nuclear facility.
The nuclear plant is expected to generate enough electricity to power more than 500,000 homes as part of efforts to expand U.S. nuclear energy capacity.

The Duane Arnold Nuclear Plant stopped operations in 2020 after suffering damage from a derecho, a powerful windstorm associated with rapidly moving thunderstorms and heavy rainfall.
The facility’s restart gained momentum last year when Google and NextEra Energy announced a partnership in which the technology company would purchase electricity from the plant to support its artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructure operations.
Supporting America’s nuclear energy expansion
The loan is part of the Trump administration’s broader push to strengthen nuclear power alongside traditional energy sources such as fossil fuels.
Deputy Energy Secretary James Danly said the financing represents “another step in advancing America’s nuclear renaissance” as the country seeks to increase reliable energy capacity.
