Market Reaction

Crude oil prices climbed Monday following President Donald Trump’s statement that Iran would pay for the deaths of three U.S. service members, and after Houthi militants in Yemen imposed a maritime embargo on Saudi Arabia.

Brent crude futures rose about 1.3% to $89.22 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude advanced 0.9% to $83.23 per barrel. Both benchmarks have surged roughly 20% this month amid escalating U.S.-Iran hostilities.

Geopolitical Drivers

Trump warned on Truth Social that Iran would face severe consequences for U.S. military casualties. Brent crude spiked nearly 4% overnight, briefly breaking $90 per barrel, after the U.S. confirmed the deaths of three service members. Prices eased slightly after Iran’s Foreign Ministry indicated possible negotiations with the U.S.

Simultaneously, Houthi forces in Yemen announced a maritime blockade against Saudi Arabia, raising concerns over further disruptions to oil flows through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Strait of Hormuz.

Supply Measures and Conflicts

Saudi Arabia has rerouted millions of barrels per day through a Red Sea pipeline to mitigate global supply shortages. The U.S. has conducted nine consecutive nights of airstrikes on Iran in retaliation for tanker attacks, which have already caused casualties among seafarers.

An oil tanker, the Kavomaleas, flagged in Malta, was struck off Oman’s coast, resulting in a fire and crew evacuation, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations Centre.

Regional Tensions

Iran has fired missiles at Middle East allies, including strikes on Kuwaiti power and desalination facilities. These events contribute to heightened global energy risk and further support oil prices.

Impact on Gasoline

U.S. gasoline prices returned to $4 per gallon as crude surged 18% in July. Analysts warn that slowed shipping traffic through key straits and low global inventories could push prices above $100 per barrel.

Expert Commentary

Amrita Sen, founder of Energy Aspects, noted that despite recent price gains, the market remains complacent regarding the potential for further disruptions.
