Recall Affects Canada and the United States

A shampoo sold in Canada and the United States is being recalled because of possible bacterial contamination. Kao USA has recalled certain lots of Oribe Serene Scalp Densifying Shampoo after Pluralibacter gergoviae bacteria was detected.

Which Products Are Included

The recall applies to 8.5 ounce and 33.8 ounce bottles, equivalent to approximately 250 mL and 1,000 mL. The affected products were manufactured between Feb. 21 and 26, 2026. In Canada, many retailers sell the smaller bottle for $67.

Affected Lot Numbers

Consumers can check whether their shampoo is included by looking at the code printed on the bottom of the bottle. The affected codes begin with the prefix “YR.” At this stage, lots YR010556, YR010566 and YR010576 are included, although additional lots may be added later.

Company Says Review Is Still Underway

The U.S. announcement stated: “Further investigation to confirm the scope of the issue is still ongoing.” It also added: “We are working with our partners to review manufacturing practices to help prevent similar issues in the future.”

Health Risks Linked to the Bacteria

Pluralibacter gergoviae usually presents little risk to healthy individuals. However, it can cause more serious health concerns in some people, especially those who are immunocompromised. Possible complications include respiratory diseases, urinary tract infections, eye infections and sepsis.

Previous Recalls Involving the Same Bacteria

Since 2020, Pluralibacter gergoviae has been connected to at least four other recalls of cosmetic or personal care products in Canada. Those previous recalls involved items such as wipes, bubble bath and mouthwash.

What Consumers Should Do

Anyone with one of the recalled bottles should stop using the product. Consumers who experienced adverse effects or want to arrange a replacement can contact the company at 800-333-2442 or by email at [email protected].

Brand Ownership and Canadian Notice

Oribe is owned by Kao USA, a subsidiary of Kao Corporation, the Japanese chemical and cosmetics company. As of Monday, Health Canada had not posted a recall notice. Health Canada and the company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
